Lesson Plan Reflection part 2

As I am finalizing my lesson or unit plan I have come to the conclusion that I am glad to finally be finished with this process. I often found myself completing on section of the lesson and then having an “ah ha” moment and going back to add or change something else. I am beginning to see why this process can be time consuming for teachers because just this mock one ate up a good amount of my homework/study time.

I wish everyone good luck as they finish their lesson plans and await to see what everyone has to offer tomorrow.

Lesson Plan Reflection

Having gone through the K-12 public schooling system I had always heard teachers talking about lesson plans and how much stress they can cause. Being younger and not truly having an idea as to what that meant, I just chalked it up to something teachers just say. Now that I am in college and attempting to become a teacher in my own right I can now put myself in the shoes of my previous teachers and am able to get a glimpse of their struggles. Having done some work on the unit plan already I can safely say that I know why there is an entire course dedicated to just this because just doing this basic unit plan I can already feel some of the struggles my teachers went through. So far the main roadblock is just figuring out where everything fits and how and or why it fits there. Overall this assignment is giving me some insight into what goes into making a lesson plan and gives me an estaminet of the work it takes to finish.

How Could I Use Video or Podcasting In My Class?

I like the idea of using the Live Streaming method in my classroom because I think the possibilities seem to have a wide range. In my classroom I could see the Live Streaming method being used during a science lesson to communicate with a class from another school or even state to compare findings of the project we were working on. I could also see the Live Streaming method working show students what classrooms in other countries look like, kind of like that video we watched about how skype linked students to the minecraft creator.

I can also see the other side of things that say that having all these live videos and podcasts are only going to distract students from the work that they should be doing. Yes I acknowledge that technology can sometimes be a distraction, but I see that as a result of a teacher or instructions lack of preparation. The way I see it is that if technology is being abused by the students its because they haven’t been given the chance to learn how to use media like podcasts or video animation softwares in an academic way.

Overall I would say that by having our students understand how to use these various medias in an academic fashion only benefits us as educators. I say this because we have all heard about how more often than not teachers burnout due to the repetitive nature of their work. By learning to incorporate these different media in our daily lessons we will more often then not encounter new and innovative ways to explain or get subject matter into the minds of our students.

Web 2.0

In these changing times we as educators must keep up with the fast pace turnover of technology. Edmodo is a site that allows teachers to establish a connection with not only their students but the parents of their students as well. Edmodo is a web 2.0 application that builds these connections via a social/web based aspect. Edmodo allows teachers to establish a sort of facebook/twitter type connection with students in a way that doesn’t have the stigma of those social sites. I personally think that Edmodo covers many if not all of the standards because the way it is set up, the site allows for teachers to encourage their students to take the initiative and show their creativity by establishing a rapport. There isn’t much to know before using the site other than the idea that it is a site for teachers, parents, and students. It its important to know that the site and pages that are created within the site need to be used for educational reasons. A major positive aspect of this site is that it incorporates the use of technology to teach and educate children, which is important in an era where younger and younger aged children are being exposed to the web and all it has to offer. The site also gives students practice at using technology for academic reasons, and how technology use for academic reasons differs from social reasons. One negative thing I would comment about this site is that it is still set up like a social media site, which can deter some teachers and parents as well. With the social media site outlay parents may feel it not appropriate for their children to be on or use for school purposes. Edmodo can be used for any age groups because the teacher can adjust content based on what grade they are teaching. I personally wouldn’t mind attempting to use Edmodo in my teaching career, which I would be teaching middle school level. Edmodo can be located here at Edmodo Site.

Digital Citizenship (Copyright)

After reading the article Copyright 101 I’m not yet sure if I have new found appreciation for copyright laws, or if a seed of hatred has been planted firmly in my soul. From my understanding of the article the word “copyright” means one protecting one’s original ideas or creations against theft. The four tests used are guidelines that allow students or anyone trying to quote or use academically, another persons work, to give them a check sheet they can follow. The four tests provide a reference of sorts for copyright rules. The media involved matters because each media has a variation on the amount and length something can be used. For instance 10 minutes of a video is not easily calculated into 10 minutes of a poem. Different medias require different regulations because just as what we say and what we write are different from another person, media differs from other forms of media.

Design

This chapter was very informative due to the fact that I personally don’t know much about the whole design/presentation process. So this chapter opened my knowledge and gave me a different perspective on how a presentation could be bettered.

I can incorporate this newly found information into my future presentations, for example our up and coming presentation in this class. Also with this information I will be able to plan out which elements best serve my various presentations in order to construct a proper presentation. When I become a teacher I will have more practice at the whole design process thus I will be able to help my students understand and recognize which aspects best fit specific presentation ideas.

After reading this chapter I would have to say that my past presentations have been adequate to say the least. Due to my lack of investment in the design process my past presentations have lacked many of the suitable nuances that this chapter has enlightened me too.

True or Not Article

I don’t think that as a society we are at a point in which we can say that we are information literate. I think this because even though we like to skirt the fact that technology and information are not available to all in the same quantity. We can say that there are those who are more informative than others, but to say that all are informed is to generalize.

We can teach our students to have the essential skills to become information literate. I do think that in the general sense of things as a society we are leaning towards having many of our students containing some rudimentary skills towards becoming literate. We are doing this by passing on and instilling various tricks and tools that allow our students progress in the information age.

We can do our best to prepare students to use the medium. We can only give them the proper guidance. As educators we can only use the power we have through our school systems to help our students be prepared to use and possibly master the medium. Despite educators doing all they can to prepare students it is essentially up to the students themselves to decide on if they will take the preparation given to them and continue to build upon it.
